Painting and calligraphy hermit, impartial and honest

——Appreciation of Mr. Zhao Pu's Painting and Calligraphy Works (Written by / Shao Dazhen)

When I first read the plaque of "Yuanmingyuan Park", all sorts of feelings well up in my mind. Perhaps it was because I was there, or because of these simple and forceful Chinese characters, which made me seem to be brought into history by an invisible force rubbing against the indelible scars in the depths of my soul and I started a very heavy thinking. What I didn't know at that time was that this kind of natural, great and solemn official script was written by a calligrapher who was only over 40 years old but already famous in the capital.

Mr. Zhao Pu was born in 1939. He was fond of painting and calligraphy when he was a child. He copied all the famous calligraphy works, and repeatedly pondered the steles such as "Yi Ying", "Li Qi", "Zhang Qian", "Chao Hou Xiao Zi", and "Xian Yu Huang". After continuous refining, he has become ingenious. After his retirement, he spent fifteen years alone in the Ditan Fast Palace, concentrating on studing calligraphy and painting, learning the strengths of all calligraphers, and finally formed an "official script of Zhao" style with the main characteristics of “firm strokes and square fonts”! Mr. Zhao is a member of China Calligraphers Association, vice chairman of National Painting and Calligraphy Art Committee, visiting professor of Institute of Educational Standardization, China Academy of Management Science currently. He has written three popular books on official script, Introduction and Improvement of Official Script, Learning and Appreciation of Official Script, Analysis and Learning of Official Script, and Zhao Pu Calligraphy and Painting Collection, which have made great contributions to the popularization of official script. Mr. Zhao Pu's three representative official script works, Diamond Sutra, Tao Te Ching and Analects of Confucius, created a precedent in the field of official script, which can be said to be unprecedented.

Mr. Zhao is familiar with official script, regular script, seal script and running script, and he is the best at official script. His characters are calm, magnificent and upright. The overall style is vigorous and graceful; The layout is very impressive; The structure is firm and stable, and the texture is dense; The writing is calm with round in the square, rigid in the soft; The utilization of brush is steady and slow; The ink is thick and natural; In his octogenarian years, Mr. Zhao's ability of writing is still amazing, precise, steady and vigorous, and incisive. In black and white, between the brush and the form, it shows great artistic beauty with great individuality, which leads to nostalgia for the past and expands rich thinking about the thickness and value of life!

Mr. Zhao's paintings have artistic conception, dense accumulation, great skills, but almost covered by the light of calligraphy. His paintings are drawn from a wide range of materials, including landscapes, vegetation, bamboo and chrysanthemums, insects and birds. The artistic conception of the landscape is solemn, quiet and deep, the composition is dense, the color is harmonious and moist, and the utilization of ink are sophisticated and special. Between looseness and tightness, detail and omission, taking and giving up, emptiness and reality, it creates a magnificent and beautiful conception, giving people a feeling of depression, quietness and grace. Plants, bamboos and chrysanthemums are vivid, elegant and colorful. The contrast of color and ink makes people have a strong visual impact; The painting of insects and birds is fine and beautiful, combining freehand brushwork with meticulous brushwork, depicting in detail and light color, which makes the insects and birds are dynamic and lifelike. A few strokes encompass endless profound meanings, where there is ink, there is painting, and where there is no ink, also painting. Romain Rolland said, “The great significance of art basically lies in that it can show people's true feelings, the mystery of inner life and the passionate world.” Among the lines of Mr. Zhao Pu's calligraphy works and paintings, we can easily understand his diligent pursuit of life and art. It is not difficult to see his indifferent attitude towards fame and wealth, quiet and far-reaching mind, and his gentleness in the depths of his soul.
